What to Expect from Your First Counseling Session

Posted on

Starting counseling for the first time can feel unfamiliar. Knowing what to expect can help ease any uncertainty and allow you to get the most out of the experience.

Before the Session

There’s no special preparation required. Some people find it helpful to think briefly about what brought them to counseling and what they hope to gain, but you don’t need to have everything figured out.

During the First Session

The first session is often about getting to know each other. Your counselor will likely:

  • Ask about what brings you to counseling
  • Learn about your background and current situation
  • Discuss how counseling works and what you can expect
  • Answer any questions you may have

It’s Okay to Take Your Time

You don’t need to share everything in the first session. Counseling is a gradual process, and trust builds over time. Share what feels comfortable, and know that you can set the pace.

After the Session

Take a moment to reflect on how the session felt. It’s normal to feel a mix of emotions — relief, thoughtfulness, or even uncertainty. These reactions are all part of the process.

The most important step is showing up. Everything else follows from there.
